Abstract

This master’s thesis, “Conservation and Restoration of Metal Grave Markers and Structures,” examined grave markers and grave borders crafted by 19th- and 20th-century metalworkers, blacksmiths, and metalworking industries with a view to their future preservation. There are still numerous metal grave markers and grave structures preserved in old cemeteries, but corrosion and external deformations—caused by falling trees and branches, as well as vandalism have significantly deteriorated their condition. In Estonia, there are no specific guidelines for grave site owners regarding what can be done and how to proceed in cemeteries designated as historical monuments. Furthermore, the use of modern technologies and materials for the conservation and restoration of metal cultural heritage preserved in outdoor conditions has not been studied.
