A comparison of the descriptions of characters: Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet and its Estonian translation

From the perspective of the target culture a translator’s work on a novel could be regarded as impactful and often as crucial as one of the the original author. As characters form a part of a story world, it is important for the translator to stay as close to the source text as possible when describing them, because otherwise the original mental image created in the readers’ mind could change completely. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the two main characters Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson in Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet(1887) and its translation Etüüd Punases(2003) by Agu Tann in order to see whether the way the characters are portrayed will affect their character descriptions in translation. I will utilize Edward Morgan Forster’s concept of flat and round characters for categorizing and comparing the characters in the original and in the translation.
A Low’s Pentathlon analysis of translations of Estonian songs in the Eurovision Song contest

The translation of song lyrics is one of the more complex fields of translation. While translations of song lyrics are relatively rare compared to other types of translation, one of the common occurrences of them is in the Eurovision Song Contest. Using English translations provided by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), this study aims to identify issues and notable aspects of translating songs from Estonian to English. The translations are analysed using Low’s (2005) Pentathlon Principle and compared to the musical notation to reveal how the aspects of singability, sense, naturalness, rhythm and rhyme influence the performability of a translation. The EBU translations are then compared to sung translations to show how different approaches can produce considerably different results in terms of singability. The results of the analysis are used to exemplify how aspects like stress and rhythmic match have a considerable effect on the singability of a translation and how semantic flexibility can allow the translator to work within the limitations posed by the musical aspects of melody and rhythm.
A Modern renaissance: a thematic analysis of fan discourse on Dante Alighieri’s Inferno in r/Hozier

The present thesis aims to study the phenomenon of pop culture driving a modern renaissance of classical culture by conducting a thematic analysis of fan discourse on the r/Hozier subreddit, a digital communication hub for fans of the Irish musical artist Hozier. The study aims to reveal how online fan communities contribute to the phenomenon and how analyzing the relevant discourse helps us understand it. The thesis includes an introduction, a literature review, an empirical study and a conclusion. The introduction provides background information on Hozier and his inspiration for the album Unreal Unearth (2023). The literature review introduces the academic literature on Hozier, fandom studies, and the social media platform Reddit. The empirical study covers the collection and pre-processing of data, as well as the thematic analysis of 27 posts and related comments in eight thematic subsections. The discussion of the findings and their implications is presented in a separate subsection. A Study On the Translation of Stream of Consciousness in Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf

Translation studies influence the promotion of intercultural dialogue between smaller languages and more widely spoken ones. This dialogue may aid in advocating towards cultural and linguistic diversity and preservation and possibly lead to a more connected world. The roughly 1.1 million native speakers make Estonian a small language, which might influence the availability of resources or hinder the filling of research gaps. This thesis studies the translation of the narrative method of stream of consciousness from English to Estonian. The source text is Mrs. Dalloway (1935) by Virginia Woolf and the target text Proua Dalloway (1998) by Riina Jesmin. This research inquires into the strategies the translation of Mrs. Dalloway uses to render stream of consciousness, as well as into the implications of linguistic and cultural differences between the source and target culture. The thesis consists of an introduction, which presents a short synopsis of the novel and what it is known for. The next chapter covers relevant literature about stream of consciousness, Mrs. Dalloway and translation theories. The empirical chapter studies the characteristics of the source text and analyses the target text on the backdrop of the literature review. The analysis will focus on the first and last two pages of the novel, featuring consecutive extracts from the source and the target text. The methods of close reading and structural analysis will be employed with some historical and cultural contextualization. Follows a discussion.

A translator's work on a novel can be regarded as impactful and often times can be considered the item which could support the success of work. For that reason, translations should usually try to convey the meaning of the text, but also attempt to keep the original style and narrative tools in place. Attempting to keep those things intact could prove a challenge to translators for various reasons, and diverting from the original form can end the translation up with translational deforming tendencies, most famously listed by Antoine Berman. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the deforming tendencies visible in the translation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, specifically focusing on the journal entries of Jonathan Harker.

This thesis explores the translation of Juhan Liiv’s (1864–1913) poetry into English, focusing on nature imagery, especially autumn colors. The analysis covers two poems ‘Lehed lang’sid’ (1897) /‘Leaves Fell’ and ‘Sügise’ (1903)/‘Autumn’ from a collection of Liiv’s poetry translations Selected Poems in Estonian and English: Juhan Liiv (2024) by Jüri Talvet and Lee Harvey Hix. The aim of this study is to analyze how the inherently Estonian poetry of Juhan Liiv transfers to a very different linguistic and cultural system of the English language. The comparative analysis concentrates on both the formal features as well as the content of the poems with a special attention on the imagery connected to autumnal colors. The thesis consists of an introduction that provides a background on Liiv and the translation of his poetry, followed by a theoretical section conceptualizing poetry translation and Juhan Liiv’s poetry. The empirical section provides an analysis of the poems and a discussion of the translations. The thesis ends with conclusions where the results of the analysis are presented. This thesis focusses the detective fiction subcategory of hard-boiled crime fiction and its main characteristics specifically slang words and their translation strategies. The analysis is based on James Hadley Chase's Mission to Siena (1955) and its two different translations from English into Estonian, both published in 1991. The first part of the thesis consists of an overview of detective crime fiction and its subcategories with a focus on hard-boiled crime fiction and its characteristics. In the following slang is defined and the most used translation strategies for translating slang are described. The first part also contains a deliberation on the possible reasons for the phenomenon of two simultaneously published different translations. The second part of the thesis focusses on the comparative analysis of the translations of Mission to Siena by Votele Viidemann (Missioon Sienas) and Kaimo Vuks (Kilpkonna tuleb otsida Sienast). The translators' choices concerning translation methods used for slang words translation are compared and analysed.

The aim of this paper is to show that even if the translator understands two different languages, translating poetry is challenging, as there are many cases when, we have to omit or change words or phrases to keep the poetical or prosodic aspects. We can also see that in this case translators can understand that the denotative options do not carry the emotion of the words that are expressed. For this thesis I will study two translations into English of the poem 서시(seoshi) by a famous Korean poet Yoon Dong Ju (1910–1945) and analyse the differences between them. The translations under scrutiny are: Chae-Pyong Song and Darcy Brandel’s Prologue, Kyung-nyun Kim Richards and Steffen F. Richards Foreword.

This thesis studies how Rupi Kaur (1992), an Indian-born Canadian social media poet who deals with hurt, healing, self-love, and empowerment, empowers women through feminist elements in her first poetry collection milk and honey (2014). Kaur has a large number of followers on social media, and an online community that offers a safe space for everyone. She is known for being an advocate of human rights and aims to empower marginalised groups, herself having a doubly marginalised identity, being both a woman and an immigrant.

Bakalaureusetöö eesmärk on uurida lähemalt eesti tõlkijat Helga Krossi, tema elulugu ning tõlkepoeetikat Edgar Allan Poe lühijutu “Usheri maja Hukk” põhjal. Lisaks võrdleb autor Helga Krossi ning Johannes Aaviku sama teose tõlkeid. Töö koosneb kahest osast: kirjanduse ülevaatest ning empiirilisest analüüsist. Esimene osa keskendub tõlkija rollile kultuuri edasikandjana ning nähtamatusele ühiskonnas. Teine osa sisaldab Helga Krossi tõlkepoeetika analüüsi ning tõlkevõrdlust Johannes Aavikuga. Bakalaureusetööst selgub, et Krossi eelistab oma tõlkepoeetikas jääda nähtamatuks ning püüdleb identsuse poole originaaltekstiga. Krossi ja Aaviku tõlkepoeetikad on küllaltki erinevad. Aavik suhtub tõlkesse vabamalt, mis on omane tema ajastule, ning kasutab Poe’le iseloomulikke aspekte enda keeleuuenduslikel eesmärkidel.

Oscar Wilde and the allusions to queerness in "The picture of Dorian Gray"

Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray was first published in July 1890 simultaneously in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in Philadelphia, USA, and in UK. The novel deals with topics such as mortality of beauty and youth, corruption of the soul and art, and how art imitates life, but it also contains hints and allusions to same-sex love, more particularly male homosexuality which was a part of Wilde’s life that influenced his writing. The main focus of this thesis is on the queerness of the three main characters; which was considered immoral and corruptive during Wilde’s contemporary time.

Social stratification is a central aspect in Donna Tartt’s The Secret History and is largely conveyed through linguistic variation in character speech. This thesis compares the employment of idiolects, sociolects, and register in the novel and its Estonian translation by Liina Viires. As Estonia has a significantly different sociopolitical history and is a much younger literary language than English, this thesis hypothesises that the distinctions in character speech are less prominent in Estonian. The introduction provides a summary of the novel, an overview of its popularity, and insight into the elements which convey social stratification in the novel. The literature review provides theoretical background regarding the linguistic varieties of idiolect, sociolect, and register, how these varieties are used in character construction, and the possibilities and limitations of Estonian in their translation. The empirical section explains the methodology of the research and examines the use of linguistic varieties in both the original text and its translation. Symbolism of the Colour Red in Toni Morrison’s Beloved

Toni Morrison’s slave narrative Beloved (1987) can be called a stem text of American literature and has been studied extensively. Nevertheless, the gap in research concerning the translations of Beloved as well as the use of symbols such as colour in the novel is apparent. Thus, this thesis examines some of the meanings of red in Beloved and compares the original to the Estonian translation by Krista Kaer and Kalevi Kvell Armas (1997). The aim is to see whether the translators’ choices might influence the meaning of colour symbolics found in Beloved and this way have an impact on the readers’ perception of the importance of the red symbols . Previous papers analysing Beloved from various viewpoints are discussed in the first subsection of the literature review. As red is the colour of interest in this paper, works concerning both, the sources of red dye as well as potential meanings of the colour are examined in the second subsection. Methodology and analysis can be found in the second chapter. The phrases for empirical analysis were selected using close reading and the method applied in analysis was developed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2002). The English phrases and their Estonian counterparts were first analysed separately and then compared to discuss the effect of potential changes on readers’ understanding of the symbols and occurring differences in the assigned value of the reds. The findings are highlighted in the conclusion of this thesis.

The cultural aspect of translation often provides challenges for translators, as aspects of culture are an integral part of translation. The aim of this thesis is to concentrate on the conveying of culture specific phenomena, especially food and to provide a comparative analysis of Inna Feldbach' translation based on Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar. The thesis consists of two parts: literature overview and a comparative analysis. The first part is an overview of the translation of food as a part of culture specific context in the early years of the Republic of Estonia, with the main emphasis on translation theories by Peter Newmark, Anne Langeand Peeter Torop. The second part will focus on a comparative analysis of food terminology in Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and its Estonian translation “Klaaskuppel” by Inna Feldbach.
